Managing ESG at Schnitzer

Stakeholder Engagement

We are proud to collaborate with a broad range of individuals, businesses, and community organizations to keep our Company running strong.

Employees

We strive to create a workplace culture where employees feel safe, included, valued, and prepared with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Customers & Suppliers

At Schnitzer, we pride ourselves on the quality of our products and our customer service.

From recyclers and retailers who supply materials to our metals recycling facilities to individuals and businesses seeking low-cost replacement auto parts, mechanics, and car enthusiasts at our Pick-n-Pull stores, our customers are often our suppliers. Our steel manufacturing operation serves customers, in the U.S. and Canada, including steel service centers, steel fabricators, and the construction industry.

Through loyalty and reward programs, satisfaction surveys and local community partnerships, we seek to meet the evolving needs of our customers and suppliers.

National Partnerships

Our Recycling Services team offers solutions for industrial operations and commercial businesses to support their recycling and material management programs, improves operational efficiencies, and delivers environmental benefits for our customers.

Community Partners

Our charitable giving, community partnerships, and volunteer efforts provide relevant and purposeful impacts for local individuals and community groups.

Shareholders

In the course of our investor relations activities in fiscal 2022, our senior management participated in 10 investor conferences and roadshows and hosted over 130 investor meetings. As part of our annual shareholder outreach program led by our Chairman and CEO together with our Lead Independent Director and the Chair of our Compensation Committee, we also reached out to shareholders holding approximately two-thirds of our outstanding shares, engaging with investors representing approximately 40% of our outstanding shares in response.

Government

Schnitzer teams work alongside local, state, and national government entities to collaborate with the leaders charged with making decisions in the communities in which we operate.

Stakeholder Engagement in Fiscal 2022

Public Policy Advocacy Through Industry Engagement

One of our major industry associations, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), promotes safe, economically sustainable, and environmentally responsible recycling through networking, advocacy, and education. Schnitzer teams engage directly with the ISRI community through leadership positions across the association’s various focus areas.

  • Colin Kelly (pictured lefttop) – Chair Elect of ISRI Board of Directors
  • Robert Ellsworth – Chair of ISRI Sustainability Network
  • Melissa Frangiosa – Chair of ISRI Fleet Management Subcommittee
  • Chip Koplin – Chair of Material Theft Committee, Board of ISRI Southeast Region
  • Stef Murray – Chair of ISRI Diversity and Inclusion Committee
  • Suresh Rajapakse – Board Member of ISRI Safety and Environmental Council
  • Gypsy Tucker – Recycling Industry Operating Standard ISRI Member

National & Local Policy Engagement

Schnitzer operates in 25 states, territories, and provinces and in over 100 local jurisdictions, including in Puerto Rico and Canada. Through engagement with legislative and regulatory bodies that represent these communities, we take a leadership role in the development of meaningful policy solutions that protect the environment while promoting sustainable business practices. Our engagement in trade associations, national and local chambers of commerce, and industry groups provides opportunities to learn and share best practices with our peers and advance sustainability within the metals recycling and steel manufacturing sector.

Educating Our Stakeholders

Schnitzer offers regular tours of our facilities to a broad range of stakeholders. By opening our doors to federal, regional, and local government representatives, community leaders, schools, and many others interested in the metals recycling industry, we provide firsthand experiences that illustrate the critical role metal recycling plays in decarbonizing our economy and building resilient supply chains. These visits offer essential touchpoints that reinforce the value we bring to the communities in which we operate.
